Alistair Kennedy

Alistair Kennedy Alistair began his working life with British Rail Research, having graduated from the University of Surrey with a degree in civil engineering. At BRR, he helped develop a number of innovative techniques for maintaining railway track and structures before managing the production of safety cases for new rolling stock, such as Siemens' Heathrow Express trains. This work introduced him to a number of risk management techniques and, importantly, the principles that should be applied when making safety decisions.

In 1998, Alistair joined the fledgling Risk Solutions to pursue his interest in risk management. Over the next few years he led a number of key projects in the rail sector, including a major review of UK's performance incentive regimes for the Strategic Rail Authority, before becoming one of Risk Solutions' Directors in 2001.

In addition to helping steer the company through a period of major change, including two changes of ownership, Alistair has continued to play a leading role on a wide range of projects including:

  • Assessing the concept of creating a railway 'Systems Authority' to encourage greater innovation in the GB rail industry (as part of Sir Roy McNulty's review of rail value for money)
  • Assisting the National Audit Office's vfm review of VOSA and performing independent reviews of other vfm reports by the NAO
  • Leading the evaluation of Irish Rail's €512bn programme of investment under the Second Railway Safety Programme
  • Managing a wide range of research projects for the Rail Safety and Standard Board
  • Developing an innovative railway safety model for the DfT based on RSSB's acclaimed Safety Risk Model
  • Overseeing the development of the Highways Agency's Network Performance Model and an agent-based model of 'managed motorway' schemes.
