Planning for Retirement

The recent Workplace Retirement Income Commission (WRIC) report on private sector pensions makes sober reading. Up to 9 million people may fall through the cracks in the system and many will be on course for a very poor old age. Failure to save when young means that people need to save harder when they are older if they are to have an adequate retirement income. Modelling Seminar

A big part of the work we do at Risk Solutions involves analysing large data sets and developing mathematical models of complex systems. Highways Agency Safety Risk Model

The Highways Agency has appointed Risk Solutions to explore the idea of developing an holistic safety risk model for the strategic road network (SRN) in England. This will capture all of the safety risks associated with the operation, maintenance and improvement of the SRN and particularly the interactions between risks to road users, road workers, Traffic Officers and third parties.

Alcohol Promotion Alcohol-related Problems on the Railway

Alcohol is widely acknowledged to be a major problem for society in Britain, and the railways are not exempt. Intoxicated passengers are more likely to injure themselves, be victims of crime, behave antisocially or act aggressively towards staff and other rail users.

HGV accident Keeping Unsafe Lorries And Coaches Off The Road

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) provides licensing, testing and enforcement services to goods vehicles, buses and coaches operating in Great Britain.

One of VOSA's main objectives is to improve road safety. Risk Solutions recently helped the NAO perform a VfM review of the agency's activities in this area, with particular responsibility for investigating the agency's risk-based approach to targeting its enforcement activities on HGVs, buses and coaches.

VfM Review of Railway Safety

As part of a wider programme of investment in the country's transportation system, the Irish Government is making significant investments in the rail network through a 15 year Railway Safety Programme. To ensure that the programme is delivering value for money and inform priorities for the final five years of the programme, Risk Solutions was appointed to conduct an independent evaluation and policy review of the programme in February 2008.

Modelling Delays on Trunk Roads

The Highways Agency is responsible for the operation and stewardship of the Strategic Road Network in England. Its primary functions are to reduce congestion, improve journey time reliability and safety, whilst minimising the network's adverse impact on the environment.

One of the Agency's key objectives is to minimise delays and this requires it to understand and manage the factors affecting traffic flows. Risk Solutions is working closely with the Agency to model the factors that affect delay and journey time reliability and to assess the impact of different options to manage the network.

The Risk and Regulation Advisory Council (RRAC) has been leading an experimental offensive against the mishandling of risk in society. Nuclear power Risk Governance of European Critical Infrastructures in the ICT and energy sector

Risk Solutions, working with AEA Technology, has developed a Risk Governance Framework for the European Commission, which is to be used to identify the vulnerability of pan-European energy supplies (oil, gas, electricity) to threats relating to ICT systems. The Risk Governance Framework then helps organisations decide how to manage these potential threats.

ISO 9001 Risk Solutions Achieves ISO9001:2008 Accreditation

Risk Solutions has been accredited to the ISO9001 quality standard (and its predecessor BS5750) since 1997. Our latest external audit by LRQA found that we were fully compliant with the latest (2008) version of the standard. The auditor commented on the continuing high level of client satisfaction and recent enhancements to our security arrangements to address increased concerns about data security from our public sector clients.

In April 2009 the DfT published "A Safer Way: Consultation on Making Britain's Roads the Safest in the World". Risk Solutions has a close interest in the subject through its work with the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) and is working closely with the Highways Agency on a number of projects in the area. Risk Solutions has recently been commissioned by the HSE to estimate the costs to Britain of workplace injuries and work-related ill-health.
