The Department for Transport and the Highways Agency have decided to use the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) to explore the use of 'synthetic environments' (i.e. virtual reality) applied to transport. The technique is being used to model traffic flows on managed motorways, and the strategies used by traffic controllers to manage traffic in peak periods. Risk Solutions is leading one of three teams charged with developing a prototype model.
The Highways Agency is responsible for the operation and stewardship of the Strategic Road Network in England. Its primary functions are to reduce congestion, improve journey time reliability and safety, whilst minimising the network's adverse impact on the environment. Tackling Public Risk The Risk and Regulation Advisory Council (RRAC) has been leading an experimental offensive against the mishandling of risk in society. Risk Solutions was commissioned by the Council to capture the essentials of its approach. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) provides licensing, testing and enforcement services to goods vehicles, buses and coaches operating in Great Britain.
Risk Solutions, working with AEA Technology, has developed a Risk Governance Framework for the European Commission, which is to be used to identify the vulnerability of pan-European energy supplies (oil, gas, electricity) to threats relating to ICT systems. The Risk Governance Framework then helps organisations decide how to manage these potential threats.

In April 2009 the DfT published "A Safer Way: Consultation on Making Britain's Roads the Safest in the World". Risk Solutions has a close interest in the subject through its work with the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) and is working closely with the Highways Agency on a number of projects in the area. These include local agencies providing support and advice to offenders through 'brief interventions'. Various studies have demonstrated the beneficial impact of this approach in a healthcare setting, and the Home Office has commissioned a team led by Risk Solutions to evaluate the impact of brief interventions in the criminal justice area. |
