Tackling Public Risk

"The issue of public risk is one of the most challenging areas of policy-making for any government.  I have asked the Risk and Regulation Advisory Council to provide a catalyst for the change we need in the way policy is developed across all departments."  The Prime Minister, on announcing the formation of the Council

Rising to this challenge the Risk and Regulation Advisory Council undertook an intensive programme of research and active interventions around four particularly thorny public risk issues.  It examined how distorted perceptions of risks can encourage poor policy-making and developed an approach to tackling public risk that emphasises three key disciplines:

  • Understanding the risk in context
  • Engaging with a broad community
  • Effective communication.

Risk Solutions were asked by the Council to help capture the essentials of the approach in a practical guide for policy makers and to illustrate it through a series of case studies.  This report 'Tackling Public Risk: A Practical Guide for Policy Makers' has recently been published.

A range of other guides and tools have been published by the Council along with their final report 'Response with responsibility: Policy-making for public risk in the 21st century':

  • A Worrier’s Guide to Public Risk
  • The Risk Landscape: Interactions that shape responses to public risk
  • A Practical Guide to Public Risk Communication:  The five essentials of good practice.

You can find out more about the council and access their full range of guides and tools on their web site (RRAC).
